Sights
On the northeast side of the port of Souda there is the islet of Souda with "Fortezza", a Venetian fortress built in 1571 A.D to control and protect the entrance of the gulf.
The district of Aptera and the Kalami village are located in an area of rare natural beauty, where you can visit the ancient city of Aptera, learn about its history, admire its fortification walls and the well-preserved Roman water tanks. Here you can also visit the Byzantine monastery of St. John and the castles if "Paleokastro" and "Intzedin", exhibiting unique elements of fortress architecture. A few kilometers away from Chania you can visit the beautiful village Tsikalaria, built like an amphitheatre with many picturesque passages and remains from the time of the Turkish and the Byzantine empires. Corners of history and tradition await you to discover them.
In the art village "Verekynthos" and the biotechnical park you can visit the stores and buy handmade works of art from the artists. You can also take a tour to the Museum of Typography of the newspaper "Chaniotika nea" (Chania news).
The port of Souda with its multiple functions (as transportation and commercial port, educational and athletic center and fishing spot) will offer its services to you. Here, you may visit the local stores of the area, the commercial port, the traditional island settlement of "Kato Souda", as well as the beach of "Vlite", the ally cemetery, and the river Maronis.
