The fortress of Sousbasi
In1867, in the framework of a program to control Crete from a network of towers, a fortress was constructed by Hussein Avni Pasha on the northeast side of the hill of Aptera, which became known as the Koules of Sousbasi (=sergeant). Its restoration is in progress, and the restoration cost is about 800000 euros. After its restoration, the fortress will become a museum of the fortification art of the Turkish period in Crete and a gallery, where different exhibitions will be accommodated, as well as other cultural events. The fortress is open for visitors every day.
